About the series

In the ochre light of a Moroccan moussem, I have stood at the edge of the parade ground as a line of horsemen in embroidered white djellabas and towering turbans surges forward, hooves pounding like a single heartbeat. At the final instant, with reins pulled tight and horses rearing, they fire their antique muskets in one deafening crack, vanishing behind a cloud of blue-gray gunpowder smoke. The earth shudders, the crowd roars, and through my viewfinder the world becomes a trembling haze of dust, steel, and silk.

But Tbourida is far more than spectacle. It is the living memory of Morocco's warrior past, a discipline passed from father to son-and, increasingly, daughter-where the perfect synchronization of man, horse, and rifle is seen as a measure of spiritual discipline, not just bravado. I have photographed riders backstage, tightening ornate saddles and whispering prayers into the ears of their horses, their faces calm and reverent. In that charged stillness before the charge, I understand: this is a ritual of honor, a covenant between tribe, land, and animal that no history could erase.
